Making social issues visible through design

How can exhibition design help make socially relevant topics visible and tangible? This was the key question explored by Master’s students of Exhibition Design at Hochschule Düsseldorf as part of their project “in-visible – The Lives of Women in Afghanistan after 2021.”

The exhibition addresses the realities of Afghan women’s lives following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. It focuses on topics such as education, isolation, clothing, medical care, and resistance. The students’ aim was not only to provide information, but also to create an atmosphere through space, materials, and design that makes restrictions and invisibility tangible while highlighting the strength and resilience of the women affected.

Sustainability as a key element of the exhibition concept

Alongside the social and political context of the project, responsible use of resources was a central part of the design process. The exhibition was developed following a consistent zero-waste approach and was largely created using existing and reusable materials.

A key design element of the exhibition is the use of textile structures that shape the atmosphere of the space. Among other materials, fabrics originally intended for disposal were reused. Through further processing, these materials were given a second life and became an essential part of the spatial installation.

This sustainable approach demonstrates how creative solutions can emerge when existing resources are reconsidered and used in new ways.

We are pleased that our materials became part of a design concept that combines sustainability, creativity, and social engagement. The project demonstrates how thoughtful material concepts and collaborative approaches can create an impact that goes far beyond the field of design.
